TIME STATION CONCEPT

In order to keep accurate time splits between riders in the FURNACE CREEK 508, the Time Station concept is utilized. Time Stations are stationary locations set up along the race route. Most of these locations have a public telephone present. Each Time Station is managed by a Furnace Creek 508 Race Official. As each rider passes a Time Station, their race number, name, and time are recorded by a Race Official.

It is required that each rider's support crew momentarily stop at each Time Station to make their rider's presence known. During daylight, the support crew can drive ahead of their rider and stop at a Time Station. When their rider passes, the crew can make sure their rider's time was properly recorded. The crew can also collect information on the whereabouts of other competitors in the race. The rider does not have to stop. During night hours when a rider is being followed by a support vehicle, the rider and crew can verbally sound their identification number to the Time Station Officials as they pass. The support vehicle does not have to stop. However, secondary support vehicles should stop and check for messges.

The time a rider arrives at a Time Station is the time that is recorded. If a rider plans to stop at a Time Station for more than 10 minutes, a crew member should inform the Time Station Official of this fact. When the rider is ready to leave, inform the Race Official. Do not leave without informing a Race Official. It is advisable for each crew to note their rider's arrival time at each Time Station. It is very possible that the Time Stations will not be staffed for the riders at the back of the race pack. In such cases, simply note the time and telephone Race HQ ASAP, or if no phone is available, inform a Race Official.

If a rider or team receives a time penalty, he, she, or they must serve that time at the last Time Station, TS #7. An official will be present to check the time.
