Kansas City. Oklahoma City. Oregon City. California City.
All four towns lie west of the Mississippi River. Only the latter lies directly in the path of Furnace Creek 508 riders. And its also the site of the races first Time Station.
Manned for the past 3 years by Terry Hutt of Running Springs, CA, the Time Station welcomes athletes to the 82-mile mark. First to arrive on Saturday morning was Rick Akita Ashabrenner at 11:05, followed closely by the Ostrich and Gregg Gorilla Geser of Sisters, Oregon. The Gorillas crew, fellow Sisters residents, were eager to hit the road this morning in support of their favorite ape.
Over 2 hours after Akitas arrival, Ken Niight Eagle Knutson pulled into town with a smile on his face knowing that he pushed the entire solo field ahead of him. Kens two sons, Karl and Erik, joined by friend Christine, cheerfully supported Dad as he made another attempt to conquer the 508.
